Today after receiving a very underwhelming amount of snow in western PA, my buddy and I decided to try and find a lot with at least a little snow. Eventually we found this warehouse where we got to do all the skidz.
The Golf R really comes into its own here. The stage one power makes the electronic nannies (even when switched off they come back on) disappear. It’s a very fun vehicle in slippery conditions, especially compared to my GTI.
My GTI is fun but the constant stability control interruptions lessen the winter driving experience. Maybe we’re just too immature for these very serious German vehicles. I love my car but miss my 08 Si for the fact you could fully disable traction/stability control and truly have fun in these conditions.
Did anyone else hoon their car today?

Wow, that looks like an awesome experience. I’d love to do something like that!

Oh it was, it really just made me want a dedicated track car. I might have ruined my tires, but it was worth it.

If the owner of the R can get access to a VAG-COM cable then you can run off all the nannies. I highly recommend it, you press and hold the traction button for like 5secs, then dump the clutch....

I know he’s getting an obd11, so wonder if that’s capable of turning off ESC as well.

No, that won’t do the trick. Need a VAG-com cable and the software. Checkout VWvortex. I’m sure there’s someone in the local club that can help

Out here in SEPA we got a little snow that turned to rain and washed away the slippery stuff. Go t my ‘16 R a little sideways while it was still snowing, but didn’t have as much fun as you guys.

stability control that cant be shut off should be illegal. Altho I guess that wouldn’t stop VW.

It made me sad. I keep saying I need a Miata for hooning fun.

Was wondering how much your side got. I was a little disappointed by the amount we got , especially with how much they hyped it up. Oh well, w e still had fun and it made me want an AWD R a little bit more.

It’s the first thing I tested in my e90. Thankfully it was snowing that day. I got very concerned when I hit the TCS button and it still intervened. Turns out you have to hold it down for 5 seconds to shut it off completely

That’s how this is in a way. You have to hold it down for 5 secs to disable the ESC and it will let you get one big flick or hand break turn in before it turns back on and shuts the fun down. Safe, but annoying. I might pull the fuze next snow, but we’ll see.

If you pull the fuse on my car you loose AWD and the windshield wipers will stay on

There was a week or two then a wheel speed sensor malfunctioned and my car became RWD with no stability control at all, not ABS either. Only down side was cruise control was in-op.
If I could just make a switch that fooled the ECU into thinking that a wheel speed sensor was missing then I could have RWD, and no traction control on the flip of a switch! Maybe someday, long after the car is paid off.

I went from a s tage 2 mk6 GTI to the 7R, and can confirm, it was a great step up. The R is now also stage 2, and while I'm not going to beat on it til I upgrade the clutch, it is still a blast to drive. It's also a lot less dramatic than the mk6 was, which could be a positive or a negative.

Ha that’s funny, my friend who owns this R did the same thing. Stage 2 MK6 to the 7R. I’m always surprised just how comfortable the 7R is even compared to my MK7 GTI. It has that great split personality that makes it a perfect daily.
